Dr. Veronica in Peru:  On the Inca Trail

In a country full of wonders, Machu Picchu stands out and is the most popular tourist attraction in Peru. Dubbed the “Lost City of the Incas” its majestic—and some say,  magical—ruins are perched on a steep, cloud-cloaked mountain in the Andes. “Machu Picchu”, (meaning “Old Peak” in the ancient Quechuan language) was first “discovered” by Yale scholar Hiram Bingham in 1911.

Walking through the majestic ruins today is a journey back in time where you’ll see the foundations for temples, homes, park-like open spaces, agricultural terraces, water fountains—and some architectural mysteries that still confound experts.

“Machu Picchu is a place of great serenity,” says Dr. Veronica.  ”You can’t help but feel such a sense of oneness and connection there. For me, traveling to places like this brings the whole world closer.”

One of the most familiar symbols of the Incan Empire, Machu Picchu is believed to have been abandoned in the 1400s as the Spanish conquest began to take hold. Today, it stands as a testament to the power of Incan ingenuity. In 2007, it was proclaimed a “new 7th wonder of the modern world.”
