If you’re trying to cut calories by using artificial sweeteners, you might want to rethink that strategy. Artificial sweeteners make you hungrier causing you to eat more than you should.
New research from the journal Cell Metabolism reveals why you should avoid artificial sweeteners. And Scientific American reports that the study offers evidence that the prolonged consumption of noncaloric sugar substitutes triggers “a starvation state in the brain, causing some organisms to seek energy by eating more food.”
Artificial Sweeteners Mess with Your Brain
The reward center of your brain associates sweetness with energy. When the sweetener you ingest has no energy, your brain stimulates your appetite. When sweetness and your energy is out of balance, your brain recalibrates and increases the total amount of calories you think you need.
Studies on fruit flies and mice both showed increased appetite at thirty percent more calories than their regular intake. Research also shows artificial sweeteners promoting hyperactivity, insomnia, and poor sleep. Mild starvation and fasting also have the same effects in previous human studies.
Other artificial sweeteners showed contradictory results, so we need more controlled studies to confirm how artificial sweeteners affect our diets and appetites over time.
People all around the world use artificial sweeteners to lose or maintain weight, thinking they’re healthier than they are.
Sensible Portions of Natural Food
Through the ages, we’ve come to realize we’re better off with the natural versions of things. They are always better than their artificial counterparts, but too much of a good thing is always bad for you.
Many processed foods contain hidden ingredients, so people who eat a lot tend to eat more sugar and artificial sweeteners than they think.
It all boils down to what you already know.
When you have a choice, choose growing food and sensible portions.
