Most people think that the ratio of pain to the severity of arthritis is 1:1.

When the damage to the joints is severe, you would think the pain would also be severe. Fortunately, the truth isn’t that simple. There are a lot of factors that can affect pain, all the way from your mood to the medication you take and your diet and sleeping habits. In a recent issue of the Rheumatic Disease Clinics of North America, it was said that patients with arthritis who feel helpless are the ones more likely to be disabled by pain.

So, here are some ways you can control and cope with arthritis pain. Maybe you have already been practicing some of these ways, but they might just surprise you. Improve your pain condition and improve your outlook on life.

Keep your joints in motion.

Regular exercise has always been a powerful remedy for arthritis and its symptoms. A combination of moving your joints to their full range, strength training, and aerobic exercise could make your joints become stronger, more stable, and more flexible. In doing so, your arthritis pain will likely decrease.

Give your joints some support and watch your weight.

Losing some weight will take off the extra pounds that put stress on your joints. The knees and hips are two of the joints that can experience the most discomfort, so lose weight to relieve pain.

Eating right can fight joint inflammation.

Joint inflammation can be avoided or alleviated by eating food that contains antioxidants and plant chemicals. Seeds, nuts, and other plant-based foods contain chemicals that reduce COX-2 enzyme activity that promotes joint inflammation. According to the Arthritis Foundation, food with omega-3 fatty acids also assist in alleviating joint inflammation.

Following these simple tips may go a long way in your pain management.

The less arthritic pain you have, the more you will be able to enjoy life and its benefits.
