Forbes may have named Monsanto its 2009 Company of the Year due to the agricultural company’s economic success—it’s growing at 18% annually and produces most of the corn seeds globally —and innovative new products but I give it a thumbs down because it uses genetically modified crops.

We don’t know what the effects of genetically-modified crops are. One of the issues they have shown in mice shown is to cause liver and kidney damage, as well as spleen, heart, adrenal, blood system damage. We need choice in our foods and we don’t need companies like Monsanto putting us on genetically modified crops when we don’t know what we’re eating.

On the other hand, Starbucks is one of my favorite companies because it’s trying to do what it can for the population. The company is into fair trade, tries to use small coffee farmers, treats its employees well and is a good corporate citizen.

As you’ve noticed, Starbucks offers an abundance of food. What you may not know is that its fare contains no additives, preservatives or food coloring. The company ceased using high fructose corn syrup, artificial colors and flavors, offers salads as well as real egg (no egg products!) in its wraps and natural turkey in its sandwiches.

We need to know what we’re eating. I like companies like Starbucks that try to take care of its employees and customers.
